How do I play?

Bowling is a game in which players attempt to score points by rolling a bowling ball along a flat surface called the lane in order to knock down objects called pins.

The bowler is allowed ten frames in which to knock down pins, with each frame being composed of up to two rolls. The tenth frame may be composed of up to three rolls: the bonus roll(s) following a strike or spare in the tenth (sometimes referred to as the "eleventh" and "twelfth" frames) are "fill balls" used only to calculate the score of the mark rolled in the tenth. Bowling has a unique scoring system that is notoriously confusing to newcomers who attempt to score a game with multiple "marks" (strikes and spares). Bowling scores tend to be unintuitive: if a bowler was to knock down 9 pins with his first shot but miss his spare every frame, he would have a score of 90; if the same bowler were to make all of his spares and knock down 9 with the bonus ball, he would have a score of 190. If he were to carry all ten pins with each shot and strike with each of his bonus balls in the tenth frame, he would have shot a "perfect game" of 300.

Are you a beginner player?

Here are some tips to became a better player.

The bowling ball: bowl with various weights until you find the proper weight. Go with the heaviest weight that is comfortable!
Where to Stand: The placement of your feet at the start of the lane will impact where the ball goes. You will need to experiment with the proper place to stand. If you are doing well, take notice of where you are standing and stand in the same spot each time. Lanes are marked so that you can do this.
Watch Your Wrist: Many new bowlers make the mistake of turning their wrists, and their balls turn toward the gutter. Instead, try to keep your wrist as straight as possible.
Bowling Stride: If you are right handed, step with your right foot first as you go down the lane. End with your left foot as you release the ball. This will assure proper balance. If this is taking time to get used to, walk it slowly and release the ball. Practice at home with an imaginary ball. Eventually, you will get it, and it will be worth the practice. Some people report a higher score of 10 pins or more just by using a proper stride.
After Spares: If you have a spare, you will get 10 points plus the next ball. Therefore, the next ball after a spare is very important. Try to knock down as many as possible. Concentrate and put into place your best bowling skills on these attempts.
Oil on the Ball: If you want your ball to curve, you will need it to be as dry as possible. The friction will help it curve. The bowling alleys are oiled, so the balls pick up oil as they roll down the lanes. To keep your ball dry, use a towel before each time you roll the ball. Dry the entire ball throughout the game.
